This site is dedicated to the fabulously talented cordwainer and designer - Vasilis Stamatakis - who worked in Heraklion, Crete (Greece) between 1941 and 1969 and designed thirty six collections of shoes - in secret - during these years.
Throughout his life Vasilis was an avid fan of 'Rembetika' and many of his designs are referential to the 'outlaw' spirit of that music. Vasilis' men's shoes were all designed in homage to various stars of The Rembetika Firmament and I intuit that the most heavily glamorous women's models were intended for the ladies who invariably accompanied these musicians, moving from town to town throughout the Levant's Rembetika circuit - Piraeus, to Beiruit to Cairo....
At the same time Vasilis was a life-long romantic. He could create demure designs to present a classically fashionable image of a woman's style, or he could 'channel' movie and nighttime goddesses to present a 'no holds barred' glamorous siren. Also, he had a playful side and created designs that can be only described as whimsical. No matter his inspiration his designs are characterized by their painstaking workmanship, superior leathers and pervading sense of style.
To learn more about Vasilis read 'About My Sole Repository of The Lifework of VASILIS STAMATAKIS'. To see his only remaining shoes choose the 'Shoe Portraits' tab and select the 'Gallery' tab for creative images by various photographers paying homage to this talented artist's creations.
